Personal Projects

Role: Level Designer/Scripter

Overview: The third time I have made something for the Blocktober event, this time I was trying to capture a feel of Okami created by Clover studios. I spent some time creating a few limited mechanics to increase the level of interaction and build in some player goals. Having a bit of time left at the end, I replaced the blockout with more detailed assets to have a more finalised version of the project.

Role: Level Designer/Scripter

Overview: My goal here was to create an environment with level layout similar to those seen in Destiny 2 but using the UE4 engine. For this, I started with assets from the Epic store. I created some additional prefab buildings to allow for a better player navigational flow around the level and get a better feel for the environment and opened up combat spaces.

Role: Writer/Developer

Overview: Created various Toolbox tutorials for Unity 3d and C# for Wireframe Magazine. Was the principal writer for a Bookazine that was released separately.

Role: Level Designer

Overview: The second year that I have made something for the Blocktober event, the idea is to make one or more, level designs or blockouts in the month of October. This time I used some of the packs that Epic have given away for free over this year, this included one asset pack – Platform Starter Pack by Platfunner and a Custom Movement BP by Ju-Sik Lee. All the level design, blueprints, and layouts are of my own creation.

Role: Level Designer/Blueprint Creation

Overview: This brings together several design elements using UE4 and the assets from Epics Infinity Blade in a custom designed arena. It shows off creation of a custom 3rd person character blueprint and utilises the adobe Mixamo animation system and assets for the character models and pre-rigged animations. There is a Dark Souls inspired combat system that has the player use only bow attacks against a fast moving blade based combatant.

Role: Level Designer

Overview: Blocktober is a level design challenge run over October, that appeared on Twitter and uses the tag #blocktober to quickly filter out relevant posts. The idea is to develop a map or set of maps in grey-box or prototyping stage. This challenge has been run over the past few years.

This is my final blockout on the completion of October and the end of the challenge, this level was created in UE4 using the Unreal Tournament 4 Beta for gameplay.

Tools: Unreal Tournament 4 (UE4)

Role: Level Designer

Overview: Utilizing assets from Infinity Blade which Epic released for free on their marketplace. The purpose was to try to use a limited set of mobile assets to create a “playable” 3rd person game level/environment.

The challenge I set myself was to attempt to create a speed level design, this process means utilizing pre-existing assets with existing limitations, and creating something new from them in a short timescale.
